The Martian Project Hail Mary Gets VR Story Expansion
Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir’s acclaimed science-fiction story, is getting an official mixed-reality VR spin-off with a new chapter that expands the original novel and film.
VR developer Maze Theory has announced Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, a new title based on the story of astronaut Ryland Grace and his alien companion Rocky. The game has been developed in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Andy Weir, who contributed the new storyline.
This release expands the narrative for the first time beyond what the book and film show. Players take on the role of Ryland Grace and must stabilise a damaged spacecraft while devising scientific solutions during the mission. According to the developer, cooperating with Rocky is central to gameplay and reflects the relationship that drives the film’s emotional core.
The game delivers a fully immersive VR experience and mixes in features that bring elements of the user’s real-world surroundings into the action. The developer will announce further details about gameplay and supported platforms later this year.
Maze Theory has developed virtual reality adaptations linked to established screen properties, including Doctor Who and Peaky Blinders. The studio most recently produced a VR adaptation of the stealth game Thief. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars is set to launch at the end of the year for Meta Quest 3 and Pico 4.
The film adaptation of Project Hail Mary premiered in cinemas in March 2026 and quickly became one of the year’s most commercially successful releases. It grossed about 425 million US dollars worldwide, making it the highest-grossing theatrical release to date for Amazon MGM Studios. The film also held the number one spot in the German cinema charts for several weeks and drew more than half a million viewers there.
Weir has indicated that he has considered possible sequel ideas for Project Hail Mary, although none have yet developed into a concept he considers ready. His next book is not expected to continue any of his existing works.
Weir is regarded as one of the leading writers in hard science fiction, a genre defined by its emphasis on scientific exactness and plausibility. This approach is a recognised feature of Project Hail Mary, including in assessments of the novel’s scientific grounding.
